Back in the Ring...

Hello Everyone...

Sorry to have disappeared for such a long time, but obviously things have not been all they were meant to be... The drummer was a welcome addition to the band and it was fun while it lasted, but unfortunately he was unable to commit fully to the band and in the end had to call it quits. We remain friends and it was all on good terms. We may even make music together again when things clear up for him, but for now... we're out of a drummer again... and no further down the road on making the EP and Album happen...

Well that's not entirely true. We  almost had it all going ( first 2 songs were done, first music video too... and that was back in may )... and if you think I was going to sit on my ass and wait for the bus to show up, you clearly don't know me well... I wrote close to 45 songs over the last 6 months, some heavy, some acoustic, some moody, all of them rocking, and I have enough material for both the Kingdom of Snakes album and a solo one now, so basically that's what's going to happen. I'm going to start recording songs for my first CD and the band's. I'm doing it all by myself. It's a huge endeavor so bear with me as it may take a while but it will happen. I have a lot of tales to tell...

I'll try updating the blog a little more often than I did lately, twice a year seems a little too much time between two posts, and I'll also post media on my youtube channel soon so that you can follow along the process of recording those songs in my home studio... That's right no pro studio for me, my home studio is more than able to handle producing those albums.

So see you in a couple weeks...

So, about that audition...

Well, all I can say is... it went well !

The drummer was really into the music, we played pretty nice, and the songs sounded really good for a first time playing together. It all flowed pretty naturally, which is always a GREAT sign of things to come...

So, here's what's coming... The first single will be available by the end of this month, then the EP by the beginning of April, and 5 more tunes as individual songs after that over the course of the next few months leading up to summertime. Add in a couple of covers, and we'll be armed and ready to play live before Spring, and I couldn't be happier about this stuff.

Oh yeah... and music videos... we're thinking about it, and I'll keep you folks posted.

What up ?

Only a couple of days before we have auditions for the drummer. Anxiety is on the rise. Anxiety because a lot of what needs to be done next depends on us having a drummer in the band. We have 5 songs ready to be recorded professionally, and we want to do it now rather than later, which is understandable considering how good those 5 songs sound to us. They really are our best work to date. The demos are already pretty good sounding, I can't imagine what the final product will sound like. I can't wait.
Whatever happens, the EP will be available in April and the first single in about 3 weeks, so around the 20th of February. Then we'll shoot a video to go along with it in early March, drummer or no drummer. We have a very serious candidate for the job and we are sorta biased towards him for the position, but we'll see what happens.

You can listen to some snippets on the reverbnation page for the band

But since I don't want to give everything away just now, you'll get to hear just over a minute of the voice and bass-free demos... No spoiler, just teaser... :)

Will post again in 2 days after we audition drummers.

Of musicians and men...

What is it that makes musicians, and artists in general, such a particular breed ? It's a good question, really, albeit a slightly more philosophical one than what you might expect from a musician's little island on the web. The truth is that artists are regular, average people, but they have an outlet, a system of expression that eludes most other folks, and through that outlet they can share any feeling they want to express, which is sometimes a better idea on paper than it is in reality. Deep intimate feelings don't always translate well to the real world... or other people for that matter.

Because nothing is off limits, you obviously will meet other people's sooner or later and that's when you find that being an artist really is about sharing, expressing and illustrating who you are, what you are and what you think and feel at the deepest level, and that is in almost direct opposition to what everyone else is doing in society. An artist who pleases people only because his choice is to satisfy an audience is not an artist. He's an entertainer. Artists are few, entertainers are many. It's true for musicians, singers, painters, sculptors, wielders and everyone else.

A true artist is defined by how he challenges his audience, makes them sometimes uncomfortable, happy, sad without following a formula... The minute you have a formula and can predict a result, you're not an artist anymore... But you don't have to be shocking or subversive to be an artist... you can be sweet, sour, mild, acidic, enigmatic, obvious, aggressive, easy, tough... just don't be monotonous. Artists explore. They don't stay in one place...

So I guess, all in all, that's probably how I would  describe artists. They are explorers of emotions, not just theirs, but ours also. And an artist's goal is often to express something that will make you react. How you react is entirely up to you and there's no right or wrong. And that's where the beauty in art lies.

What happens when you have over 50 songs and need to select 14...

It's that time... You just delivered over 50 tunes and now is hacking time. You can only get 14 for the album, 6 or 7 for an EP tops... What do you do ? You fucking procrastinate, that's what you do... Well that's what I do for sure. At least on this matter... The rest is moving along fine... I have 2 new programs in the works, the crowd funding project is being planned, we're adding followers and fans on a regular basis, but now we need to select songs and start recording them seriously...

Every new step seems harder than the previous one... Defining a genre? Easy Bro ! Writing tunes ? Not that hard, challenging sure, but really not that hard. Demo'ing them ? Piece of cake but still a notch tougher... Now selecting our favorite ones ? Kinda tough. We wrote the damn tunes.

But we do need to move along. Come february, the drummer will be announced and we'll definitely pick up the pace to make things bigger and better.

By the way, if you're following us on reverbnation or twitter or facebook, that's cool. If not, please do. You'll help us get you great content in due time.

Alright, I'll be uploading new tunes to reverbnation soon, but for now, I need to get some sleep.

What to expect in the next couple of months from Kingdom Of Snakes...

Hi all,

hope everyone is doing fine.

We might have found the drummer for the band. What does this mean you ask ? It means that the whole album thing is back on track big time and will be finished by early march. We're moving on a song by song approach, not a whole album thing but this is how we roll at this point.

So, early March, first 5 or 6 songs, then in April, another couple of songs, then in June more songs...and so on and so forth. What that means is that for the whole fucking year to come, you'll be getting new music to listen to... ain't that cool or what ?

Plus we found a director to shoot videos with us. Now that is borderline awesome ! VIDEOS ! Not crappy stuff quickly put together because we have to. I mean the whole 9 yards full HD edited stuff. I'm so stoked I'm shivering right now, no kidding.

Also, we acquired a PA system that can accommodate up to an 800 people crowd of fans, so we're set to play wherever anyone will want us to.

We're in 6th gear mode and not about to stop.
Talk soon.

PS : If you're not a fan of the band yet, get your ass over here and sign-up !
PPS : The V-Log is coming, just sorting out a couple of tech issues...
PPPS : this is my evening mood. Play this one loud.

"The contact project"...

Hello Everyone,

hope you're getting un-bloated from all the food you ingested over the course of the last 3 weeks...
Being that this is a blog, I'm supposed to let you know what I'm up to for 2013, and I already somewhat did that in the last post, but there's more to tell...

I've been thinking about communication, and how to best let you in on the writing & recording process, as well as into my activities as an author and teacher and what better way to do that than on Youtube really ?

So here's the deal, I can't spend an hour everyday editing videos, filming stuff, and what not, but I can definitely do that for about a couple hours every week, so I'll make you a deal.

Every week for at least the next year, I'll upload a video on youtube acting as a live bonus to this blog. I'll rant, I'll share, I'll explain, I'll demo and I'll let you in into the most intimate parts of my life, persona, and activities... well... maybe not to that extent you're thinking about right now, but you get the picture...

So head out to youtube and subscribe HERE to get in on the action. Most videos up there are in french at the moment, but the new ones will absolutely be in english, so fear not my Shakespearean language friends.

See you on the tube.

PS : of course you can +1 me, follow me on facebook etc etc... I'd be glad to have you as a friend in all those places.
